flux capacitor doesn't help you time travel, but saves you energy. By catching liquid as it falls down the column it prevents the liquid from being diluted again in the pot, thereby giving it another chance to be vaporised and enter the column. Vaporising it from a higher ABV (more concentrated ethanol), requires less energy. Before seeing this photo I always envisaged it more as a bucket than a bowl and actually sitting in the bottom of the column, rather than below it.
