Sizing the iStill 250 and 500 Pro Series

19 December 2015
Introduction Here's a post on the height of the new Pro Series iStill 250 and 500. Since the Pro Series models have segmented columns, you can really choose how high you want to go. Or how low you want to stay. Here are a few numbers to help you out. iStill 250 Pro Series The base unit is 190 centimeters high. That's boiler with column and column cooler, but without a catalyst or glass or Stainless Steel column sections. The Stainless Steel column sections are 36 centimeters high. The catalyst and/or glass sections are 26 centimeters high. So if you want to run the iStill 250 Pro Series with catalyst only, the total height becomes 190 + 26 = 216 centimeters. If you want to run the iStill 250 Pro Series with catalyst and one column segment, the total height becomes 190 + 26 + 36 = 252 centimeters. Add another SS section and you the total height goes to 288 centimeters. Add the last section and the total height gets to 324 centimeter. iStill 500 Pro Series The base unit is 210 centimeters high. That's boiler with column and column cooler, but without a catalyst or glass or Stainless Steel column sections. The Stainless Steel column sections are 36 centimeters high. The catalyst and/or glass sections are 26 centimeters high. Just as they are with the iStill 250. So if you want to run the iStill 500 Pro Series with catalyst only, the total height becomes 210 + 26 = 236 centimeters. If you want to run the iStill 500 Pro Series with catalyst and one column segment, the total height becomes 210 + 26 + 36 = 272 centimeters. Add another SS section and you the total height goes to 308 centimeters. Add the last section and the total height gets to 344 centimeter. What are you running, Odin? I have the iStill 500 Pro Series configured with catalyst as well as one column segment. That gives me a total system height of 272 centimeters. I will use it for whiskey making, with a 1.5 distillation approach, and for stripping washes I further want to refine into a gin and vodka. In the Amsterdam iStill Center I now also have an iStill Fermenter 1000. This size is perfect for the aforementioned 1.5 distillation approach. Say, for example, that I ferment a total of 900 liters. I can now fill the iStill 500 Pro Series with 500 liters and do a strip run on that. It will take an 8% beer to 95 to 98 liters of 40% low wines. If I add these back to the boiler, and top up with 400 liters of fresh wash, I can now do a finishing run on 500 liters at 16%. Great for cuts, great for the best tasting Hearts. In about a month time, I will add an iStill 250 Pro Series to the Amsterdam iStill Center. That one will be equiped with 4 glass segments, all packed with oversized SPP. The glass sections I will put on, to turn the wow!-factor into a WOW!!!-factor. The sections will be filled with oversized SPP because it will be used for vodka and gin finishing only. No need for copper. Total system height? The base unit is 190 centimeters. The glass sections add 4 x 26 = 102 centimeters to that, so it will be 294 centimeters. Again, the 1000 liter fermenter will serve me perfectly. It allows me to do 2 stripping runs, that - once diluted to 35% - fill the iStill 250 Pro Series for a consecutive finishing run in Pure Mode.
